The airport has the capacity to handle up to 600 arriving and 600 departing passengers and is the closest airport to Koh Lanta.
Transferring to your hotel or resort
Your best bet for getting to your hotel is to pre-book an airport transfer when reserving your accommodation. This may already be included by your tour operator – check it out. If you’ve arranged this, you’ll find someone waiting just outside the arrivals hall with your name on a placard; take your time and look carefully – it can be a bit chaotic!
If you haven’t booked a transfer, and don’t plan on hiring a car, you can get an airport limousine/taxi or shared minibus. Limousines are more expensive, but less hassle; if you choose this option, look for the booking desk inside the arrivals hall. Make sure you are getting your own vehicle and not a shared minibus. The fare is about 600-800 Baht from the airport to Ao Nang.
Hiring a car
As hiring your own car is the very best way to see Krabi and the surrounding area, you may want to avoid the airport transfer hassles and drive yourself. If you’ve pre-booked, just look for your car hire company’s logo on one of the desks or look out for a member of their staff carrying a logo sign. Check out your route beforehand and make sure you’ve got the hotel phone number handy.
Locally available maps are OK, but as yet there are no truly detailed maps available. Asking locals for directions can be more than a little frustrating; ask three people and you’ll probably get three different directions! If you get lost, find out where you are and call the hotel.
You need an international (or Thai) driving licence to drive in Thailand.
